Italy, Then and Now: How One Country Shaped My Journey as a Traveler
Share
When I first traveled to Italy back in 2016, I had no idea just how deeply it would shape the way I experience travel — even nearly 10 years later. That trip was my very first Europe international adventure, and it took me through some truly unforgettable cities: Potenza, Matera, Sant’Angelo, Naples, and Salerno.
Each of these places opened my eyes to the beauty, culture, and richness of Italy — a country steeped in vast history and vibrant traditions. From the charming cobblestone streets to the warmth of the people, I fell in love with Italy the moment I arrived.
A Lesson in Perception and Identity
This trip was especially meaningful because it challenged my perspective as a traveler and as a person. Traveling as a person of color in some of Italy’s more conservative, less diverse regions made me aware of how much perception shapes our experiences. There were moments where I felt the weight of being seen as “different,” yet those moments never overshadowed the magic of the trip. Instead, they taught me something valuable — the way you approach travel, the mindset you bring, truly makes all the difference.
Rather than holding me back, this realization fueled a deeper appreciation for the world’s complexities and reminded me that while judgments exist, they don’t have to define your journey.
A Decade of Growth and Return
Fast forward to 2025, I returned to Italy to visit Rome, Milan, Florence, Venice, and Bologna— this time under very different circumstances. After nearly a decade of traveling the world, growing in confidence and cultural understanding, I approached Italy with a fresh perspective.
The places were familiar, but I was different. I was older, wiser, and more experienced in navigating Europe’s diverse landscapes. This second trip wasn’t just a vacation; it was a reflection on how far I’d come as a traveler and as a person.
What remained constant, however, was Italy’s undeniable charm. The culture, the history, the breathtaking architecture — these timeless elements continue to draw me back. Whether in the bustling north or the sun-drenched south, Italy’s soul stays rich and inviting.
Why Italy Always Calls Me Back
Italy is a place that lives in the details — in its rich culinary history, the vibrant street art, the centuries-old buildings standing tall against the sky. Its charm is subtle yet powerful. It’s not just about the places you visit, but the people you meet and the experiences you embrace.
Some Italian cities may seem unchanged over time, but travelers evolve. We grow, learn, and shift, and that changes how we connect with each destination. My journey through Italy has been as much about self-discovery as it has been about exploring the country itself.
Looking Ahead: The Amalfi Coast and Beyond
As I prepare for my third trip to Italy, this time to the breathtaking Amalfi Coast, I bring with me all the experiences and lessons learned over the years. Italy has become more than a destination — it’s a story I’m still writing, one chapter at a time.
No matter where you are in life or how many times you’ve traveled, Italy has a way of charming you — gently, deeply, and forever.
